"Jesus, King of Angels"
"Jesus, King of Angels." I heard this song by Fernando Ortega for the first time today. Thought of how the dark can be scary even for adults. Thought also of how night is not restricted to the hours between dusk and dawn. It can also be a season of life during which only trusting Him and trusting His promise that He is with us always (even when we cannot feel His presence), and works all things, including the night seasons, for our good, can keep despair at bay and/or dispel if it has already taken hold. Sharing the lyrics and video.
Jesus, King of Angels, Heaven's light
Shine Your face upon this house tonight
Let no evil come into my dreams
Light of Heaven keep me in Your peace
Remind me how You made dark spirits flee
And spoke Your power to the raging sea
And spoke Your mercy to a sinful man
Remind me Jesus, this is what I am
The universe is vast beyond the stars
But You are mindful when the sparrow falls
And mindful of the anxious thoughts
That find me, surround me and bind me
With all my heart I love You, Sovereign Lord
Tomorrow let me love You even more
And rise to speak the goodness of Your name
Until I close my eyes and sleep again
The universe is vast beyond the stars
But You are mindful when the sparrow falls
And mindful of the anxious thoughts
That find me, surround me and bind me
Jesus, King of Angels, Heaven's light
Hold my hand and keep me through this night
Jesus, King of Angels, Heaven's light
Shine Your face upon this house tonight
Let no evil come into my dreams
Light of Heaven keep me in Your peace
Remind me how You made dark spirits flee
And spoke Your power to the raging sea
And spoke Your mercy to a sinful man
Remind me Jesus, this is what I am
The universe is vast beyond the stars
But You are mindful when the sparrow falls
And mindful of the anxious thoughts
That find me, surround me and bind me
With all my heart I love You, Sovereign Lord
Tomorrow let me love You even more
And rise to speak the goodness of Your name
Until I close my eyes and sleep again
The universe is vast beyond the stars
But You are mindful when the sparrow falls
And mindful of the anxious thoughts
That find me, surround me and bind me
Jesus, King of Angels, Heaven's light
Hold my hand and keep me through this night

"Are You the One?"
If there was anyone who knew who Jesus was, it was John, the Baptist. He leaped in his mother's womb at the sound of Mary's voice (Luke 1:39-45). He was the Forerunner, sent to prepare the hearts of the people for the Messiah's arrival (Luke 1:13-17; 3:1-6). He announced Jesus as "The Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world." He also baptized Jesus, saw the heavens open, the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, and the voice of God declaring, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased" (Luke 3:21-22; John 1:32-34).
Yet, from the darkness of prison where Herod, the king, had cast him for speaking the truth, John sought reassurance. "Are You the One Who is to come, or should we look for someone else?" It is likely that John, the one whose destiny was prophesied by Isaiah and Malachi hundreds of years before his birth, in the darkness and isolation of prison, struggled with or was even tormented by doubts similar to the ones we have today. Doubts which are triggered by difficult circumstances: doubts about who God is. Doubts about what He told us. Doubts about His promises and whether He will do what He said He would do.
Thankfully, John's doubts did not earn him an "F" with Jesus and neither will ours. Let us, like John, express our doubts to Him. As He did to John, He will respond to us with the same compassion and gives us what we need to strengthen and renew our faith. Be encouraged.

When discouragement presses in and despair is persistently trying to take hold
Sharing the video with lyrics of the classic hymn, "Be still my soul." It has calmed me, and helped me breathe deep and exhale slow so many times when discouragement is pressing in and despair is persistently trying to take hold. Be encouraged. He is truly is on your side, no matter how things appear.

Night
Night
Nestled between the dusk
and the dawn
Inviting rest yet holding
terrors
Giving cover and hiding places to that
which desires to be unseen
The night, however, is as
the day to YOU
And as such need not hold
any terrors for me
I can be still and trust
you
All through the night

Reminders to make prayer our first option
"I love the Lord," and "I must tell Jesus," are two songs that have comforted me so many times, in part because they remind that I can go to God at any time and about everything, and encourage me to do just that. They also remind me to make prayer my first option.

The choice to praise Him, regardless
"I
will bless the Lord at
all times; His
praise shall continually be in my
mouth." (Psalm 34:1)
“I will…”
– the choice
“… bless
the LORD …” – the action
“… at all
times …” – the duration
“His
praise …” – that which belongs to Him
“… shall continually be …”
– an ongoing process
“… in my mouth …” – spoken, audible
As I mused on this verse, I thought of Jesus' words to the Pharisees, on one occasion,“Out of
the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34). “Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above
all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life,” He admonishes
also, in Proverbs 4:23.
His words inform me that the content of my heart is
critical. Whatever I have in abundance there will determine what comes
out of my mouth, especially in the unguarded moments, and in times of duress.
What,
then, must I have in my heart in abundance in order for me to bless Him at all
times? For His praise to be continually in my mouth, regardless of my
circumstances and my confusion and the fight to keep standing?
The words of Psalm 71:7, “I
will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to
the name of the LORD most high,” suggest that a settled, seeped-into-every-corner-of-my
heart-knowledge of His character, would be a necessary component. The unwavering belief that He is good. That
He is for me and not against me or out to get me. That He has His hands
and eyes on me and both are grace filled. That He is full of compassion,
plenteous in mercy, and rich love. That His love for me is eternal and
unchanging and unconditional. That He really has purposed good for me.
Another
component could be the decision, even if it is one that I must make
every day or every minute, when necessary, to believe what He says over my own
thoughts, perception, doubt, and that of anyone else. Period.
Matt Redman's song,
"Blessed be Your Name," has become an anthem for me, and a stirring
reminder to bless and praise Him, regardless.
Blessed
Be Your Name
In the land that is plentiful
Where Your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name
Blessed Be Your name
When I'm found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed Be Your name
Every blessing You pour out
I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name
Blessed be Your name
When the sun's shining down on me
When the world's 'all as it should be'
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be Your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there's pain in the offering
Blessed be Your name
Every blessing You pour out
I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name
You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, blessed be Your name
In the land that is plentiful
Where Your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name
Blessed Be Your name
When I'm found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed Be Your name
Every blessing You pour out
I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name
Blessed be Your name
When the sun's shining down on me
When the world's 'all as it should be'
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be Your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there's pain in the offering
Blessed be Your name
Every blessing You pour out
I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name
You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, blessed be Your name

Isaiah 53
Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
And they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
And they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors.
Whatever is happening in your life, dear one. Whatever grief and sorrows you are experiencing. Whatever the illness. Whatever afflicts. Remember that He is fully acquainted with it all intimately. "For we do not have a High Priest Who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:15:16)

The Blessing of Struggle (Reblog of a post)
I am not the author of this post. It is from the website http://faithsmessenger.com/the-blessing-of-struggle/ It was encouraging to me and I wanted to share it. Blessings, EW.
The blessing of God is talked
about, and studied by many. I’d like to depart from that train of thought for a
moment and talk about the blessing of struggle. At face value, the terms
blessing and struggle may seem like an oxymoron. But if you’re able to embrace
struggle and see it for what it is, struggle can truly be a blessing in your
life.
The
Blessing of Struggle disarms us
The blessing of struggle removes our
dependence and reliance on all of our man-made safety nets. The blessing of
struggle places all focus on God and what He can do in our lives as opposed to
us and what we can do for ourselves.
The
Blessing of Struggle humbles us
Most of us know people who seem to
be doing well on the outside. They say all the right things and act as though
all is well with them. But deep down inside there seems to be turmoil that
cannot be disguised.
Its one thing to go through life’s
struggles knowing in the back of our minds that there are people in our lives
that can (and most likely will) bail us out of the tough situations we find
ourselves in. It’s entirely another to see no way out of our situations and
rest in the fact that only God can rescue us.
The blessing of struggle causes us
to strip ourselves of all our protective mechanisms and leaves us standing
stark naked with no alternative but to look ourselves in the mirror and confess
that only the grace of God can get us out of our predicament.
The
Blessing of Struggle Breeds Faith and Thanksgiving
Its one thing to go through life’s
struggles knowing in the back of our minds that there are people in our lives
that can (and most likely will) bail us out of the tough situations we find
ourselves in. It’s entirely another to see no way out of our situations and
rest in the fact that only God can rescue us.
When God comes to our aid in
situations where man can’t, true thanksgiving is the result. When we know in
our heart that only God could have rescued us from a detrimental and
potentially devastating situation, we walk away with more than a testimony for
those who may go through the same situation as we did.
When God delivers us from dire
straits, we have a conscience that has now been marked with a life changing
event that will remain in our hearts forever.
There are certain things that have
happened in my life that serve as constant reminders of where God has delivered
me from. When I experience these reminders, I can’t help but stop what
I’m doing and thank God for his divine protection and deliverance.
These little remembrances help to
keep our faith vibrant when we encounter impossible situations in life.
Count
the Blessing of Struggle as Joy
As the scripture says in James 1:2 count it all joy
when you fall into temptations, trials and tests. As any good fighter knows,
drawing your opponent closer makes it more difficult for him to hit you.
Fight the good fight of faith my
embracing the blessing of struggle. Discover the necessity of struggle for the
purpose of spiritual growth. Come to realize that God is right by your side in
every struggle you face.
No matter what you may be going
through, remember that He is with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you.
We have His Word on it.
Embrace the blessing of struggle and
use the power of God to come out on top in each and every challenge of life.

"Just be held"
I have had the privilege of holding babies and young children in my arms as well as see them being held. And I have watched them fighting sleep, and fighting the comfort being offered. I do that sometimes. Fight the rest and comfort He offers. Striving to be independent. Show that I am strong and can handle "it." Whatever "it" is in a given moment or season. The lyrics of the song, "Just be held" by Casting Crowns, was a reminder to me to yield to Him, that surrendering to Him is always my best option. Here is the video of the song.

"I will lift my eyes:" Sharing the lyrics and video
This song, "I will lift my eyes," by Bebo Norman is based on Psalm 121, one of my favorite psalms. I found it comforting and wanted to share it with you. Be encouraged. You are His beloved.

God, my God, I cry out
Your beloved needs you now
God be near, calm my fear
And take my doubt
Your kindness is what pulls me up
Your love is all that draws me in
Chorus:
I will lift my eyes to the Maker
Of the mountains I can't climb
I will lift my eyes to the Calmer
Of the oceans raging wild
I will lift my eyes to the Healer
Of the hurt I hold inside
I will lift my eyes, lift my eyes to You
God, my God, let Mercy sing
Her melody over me
God, right here all I bring
Is all of me
Your kindness is what pulls me up
Your love is all that draws me in
Chorus:
I will lift my eyes to the Maker
Of the mountains I can't climb
I will lift my eyes to the Calmer
Of the oceans raging wild
I will lift my eyes to the Healer
Of the hurt I hold inside
I will lift my eyes, lift my eyes to You

I will lift my eyes, lift my eyes to You
‘Cause You are and You were and You will be forever
The Lover I need to save me
‘Cause You fashioned the earth and You hold it together, God
So hold me now
The Lover I need to save me
‘Cause You fashioned the earth and You hold it together, God
So hold me now

HE said. I say
"God
has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.' So we may say
with confidence, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid..." - Hebrews
13:5(b)-6.
I read these verses and the question, "Are you singing
after God's keynote came to mind?" I knew I had read a version of this
question somewhere and finally located it in the June 5 devotional of Oswald
Chamber's book, My
utmost for His Highest. I found a contemporary translation of it on
online* and wanted to share it. Be encouraged.

God’s AssuranceJune 5, 2014
He Himself has said . . . .
So we may boldly say . . . —Hebrews 13:5-6
My assurance is to be built upon
God’s assurance to me. God says, “I will never leave you,” so that then I “may
boldly say, ’The Lord is my helper; I will not fear’ ” (Hebrews 13:5-6). In other
words, I will not be obsessed with apprehension. This does not mean that I will
not be tempted to fear, but I will remember God’s words of assurance. I will be
full of courage, like a child who strives to reach the standard his father has
set for him. The faith of many people begins to falter when apprehensions enter
their thinking, and they forget the meaning of God’s assurance— they forget to
take a deep spiritual breath. The only way to remove the fear from our lives is
to listen to God’s assurance to us.
What are you fearing? Whatever
it may be, you are not a coward about it— you are determined to face it, yet
you still have a feeling of fear. When it seems that there is nothing and no
one to help you, say to yourself, “But ’The Lord is my helper’ this very
moment, even in my present circumstance.” Are you learning to listen to God
before you speak, or are you saying things and then trying to make God’s Word
fit what you have said? Take hold of the Father’s assurance, and then say with
strong courage, “I will not fear.” It does not matter what evil or wrong may be
in our way, because “He Himself has said, ’I will never leave you . . . .’ ”
Human frailty is another thing
that gets between God’s words of assurance and our own words and thoughts. When
we realize how feeble we are in facing difficulties, the difficulties become
like giants, we become like grasshoppers, and God seems to be nonexistent. But
remember God’s assurance to us— “I will never. . . forsake you.”
Have we learned to sing after hearing God’s keynote? Are we continually filled
with enough courage to say, “The Lord is my helper,” or are we yielding to fear?

Reflections on Psalm 46:1-2: God is
I was
reading the 12/30/13 entry on a blog I follow, http://thesusanblog.com,
in which Susan shares what she took away from a sermon by her pastor, Philip De Courcy; the
sermon focused on Psalm 46.
I began reading the psalm, which she had included in its entirety. I got to the first phrase in verse 2 and was transfixed by the truth and power of what I was reading, and by its implications for my life.
“God is our refuge and strength.” Not was or will be. He is. Right now. Every moment. I do not need to seek refuge and try to muster strength. God is my refuge and God is strength. Light bulb turning on. A familiar passage of Scripture had now become Rhema to me. Okay.
Next phrase: “A very present help in trouble.” Does not matter if I cannot sense His presence. Does not matter if the voice of my Enemy and his minstrels doubt, insecurity, shame, uncertainty, are whispering in synchrony, “See, God does not love you or He will never let this happen. You deserve the trouble you’re facing. God has left you!” Not true. “God is my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” For these reasons, “Therefore we will not fear.”
I mentally inserted a period and a Selah here because I had to pause, reflect on, digest these truths. “God is.” He exists. He is I AM. God, I AM, the self-existing One, all powerful, Almighty, is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear…” What reason do I have to fear? The physical earth or my personal world is shaking? The physical mountains or the things or people I believed would always be there have been removed or are violently shaking? Physical waters as in tsunamis or floods or circumstances that feel like tsunamis or rushing floods? Yes. Even in the face of all of this, when I believe and hold on to the truth that, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” I will not fear, “Even thought the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah.” Selah. Indeed.
I recognized that these are not verses to be rushed through but ones that warrant focused meditation, until its truths are absorbed into the fiber of our beings. Living free from fear and anxiety that torment our minds, disrupt our sleep, and adversely impact our health, is possible if I believe Him, when I believe what He said, “I am your refuge and strength. I am a very present help in trouble.” These are the reasons to not be afraid regardless of what is happening in, to and around me. Selah.
P.S. The entire psalm merits reflection. I invite you to read it. Only He knows what 2014 holds for all of us but in Psalm 46, He provides powerful reminders of Who He is and the assurance of His constant presence with us.
P.S.2. I did eventually read Susan’s entire post but it took a while.:-)
